How to Create a Collaborative Classroom Environment Part 2
If you missed Part 1 on how to create a collaborative classroom, check it out here. Another step in fostering a classroom that is collaborative is to directly teach students how to be dependable. There is always that one kid who never does the group work that the rest of the group resents or even wants to kick out of the group. To prevent this from happening, create a contract or rubric that instills dependability that focuses on what is expected from each student in regards to work contribution, respectful communication, and the final product that is revised and produced. Check out our collaboration contract that we use.
Additionally, develop a classroom where structure and clarity is essential to creating a collaborative classroom. When doing group work, it is useful to set aside time at the beginning of the group work period to have each group create task oriented goals for the day and then reflect on what they accomplished and make a plan for the next day. A pre- and post- checklist, if you will.
After the group work is finished, having students fill out a self-reflection is a great way to foster SEL skills of self awareness, self management, social awareness, and relationships. This activity will also help to foster students who are dependable and accountable to the members of their group. If you have the time, a peer evaluation would also be useful to help students hear constructive feedback to be a better team player the next time around. Remember they're just kids, they need all the practice they can get.
