Reading Graffiti Walls

Do you have a space in your classroom for your students that is just for them? We like to give our students some agency over what is displayed. That is why we love a reading graffiti wall. We, of course, got the idea from a post on Pinterest many years ago, but we see other reading graffiti boards from time to time on Instagram. Our students love writing on the whiteboard, so this is right up their alley.

As for our reading graffiti spaces, students are encouraged to write quotes from their reading that speak to their hearts - that perfect combination of words and ideas that can change or impact a life, in other words the life force of reading. We are lucky enough to have multiple white boards in our classroom, so that is what we use, but you can easily just use butcher paper to make a bulletin board that you can change once the board is filled with literacy quotes. Or, paint your inside classroom door with chalkboard paint and turn it into a makeshift board. Once you have tenure, we are firm believers of just do and then ask for forgiveness later. It usually works like a charm.
