How to prepare for the first day of middle school: tips and ideas

1st Day of School Ideas

Can you believe how quickly summer flew by? Now it’s the start of another school year and first impressions are so important. Here are some ideas that we do on the first day of school to make sure to set the year off on the right note.

  • Name Plates - we have our students make name plates as we take roll. This makes learning students names faster.

  • Bloom’s Taxonomy - Using the Kwik Brain method: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/34-learn-vocabulary-faster-memorize-words-in-seconds/id1208024744?i=1000392264616 we teach our students the different levels of learning and how they will learn in our class

  • Attention Signals - we go over attention signals

  • Play-Doh - We got this idea from the book Teach Like a Pirate. On each desk is a small container of play-doh for each student and a square paper plate that matches our school colors. Students are asked to create (highest level of Bloom’s taxonomy… see what we did there?) symbol to represent their life goal. We then go and talk to each student as they are working. It is a great way to make a 1:1 connection on the first day of school.

If you love any or all of these ideas, check out our first day of school PowerPoint presentation that we use in our very own classes. It is available in our Teacher Pay Teacher store along with a ton of other amazing resources we are sure will be a hit in your class this year.
