Book Review: Teaching for Deeper Learning
I just finished reading Teaching for Deeper Learning by Jay McTighe and Harvey F. Silver. It is a teaching book on how to teach so that students thrive and learn at a deep level. Let me tell you, the title lives up to the name. Here are some of my takeaways:
This book is broken down into seven categories: conceptualizing, note making/summary, comparing, understanding, predicting, visualizing, and perspective. Each category gives 4-5 tips and tricks for framing any lesson in all subjects in a way that is meaningful to student engagement and learning.
Now, I typically read two or so teaching books a month, and I have been teaching for 21 years. So needless to say, I have read my fair share of teaching books. Lately, I have been finding only one item from the teaching books that I read to incorporate into my lessons and teaching repertoire, but with this book: Teaching for Deeper Learning, I was able to incorporate 23 new ideas. I know, right?!
I highly recommend this book for middle and high school teachers of just about any subject area. It is chock full of great and easy to implement teaching strategies. Two thumbs up, five stars, A+, 10/10.
