High Expectations Teaching Practices
A highly qualified, well versed teacher with high expectations for students has the biggest impact on student learning and progress. When students are in classes with teachers who have high expectations and know that all students can succeed, those students perform leaps and bounds above students who have teachers that, for whatever reason, just don’t have those same high expectations.
Here are some highly effective teaching practices that show high expectations of students:
Ask open ended questions
Use formative assessments way more often than summative assessments
Form multi-ability groups and switch up groups often
Encourage students to learn from all students
Give students limited choices, but give choice nonetheless
Know your students and incorporate their interests into lessons
Establish clear routines and procedures
Have students set semester goals and review them
Work with all students equally
Think, pair, share responses
In the moment feedback
Teach metacognition
