SEL Social and Emotional Learning Mini-Lessons
We taught summer school this past summer to help us get our teaching bearings back before we go back to school. The class we taught was an introduction to middle school. Our principal really wanted us to focus on and emphasize SEL strategies. SEL stands for social and emotional learning.
Surprisingly, there actually is not a lot out there to really teach these five strategies effectively to middle school students. The lessons often were boring, lacked actual depth and significance, and didn’t really focus or teach the SEL strategy in a way that was also engaging to students. As they say in the movie “Robots”, “See a need, fill a need.” So we created our own series of lessons.
Our SEL lessons focus on the five SEL strategies: relationship skills, responsible decision making, self-awareness, self-management, and social awareness. We like to teach these lessons on a weekly basis as opposed to all at once. It is a lot to digest and comprehend all at once. Slow and steady is the best way to incorporate these lessons into your weekly plans. We do have students take notes on these lessons in a handwritten notebook or in a digital notebook.
We tested these lessons out on our summer school students and they were a big hit! So, we’ve added them to our store. We hope that you find these lessons to be a huge benefit to your students’ overall well-being and help them to be successful in all aspects of life.
As always, thanks for buying our lessons on Teacher Pay Teacher. We’ve worked really hard on them and are so pleased when one of our lessons sell.
