Start Here, Start Now Book Review

If you are a teacher who is looking for insight into how to start the work on anti-bias and anti-racist  education, Start Here, Start Now by Liz Kleinrock is the book for you. We have followed Liz Kleinrock on social media for years now and were super excited when she announced she had written a book last summer. Her book did not disappoint.

As a classroom teacher herself, Liz Kleinrock provides practical strategies that she knows will work. She also provides practical ways to implement each of her strategies into the classroom setting.

Her book is broken down into eight chapters. Each chapter has three parts: Setting Yourself Up for Success, Taking Action in the Classroom, and Creating a Sustainable Practice. We loved all of the actionable steps for personal reflection and for classroom practices. She provided a ton of examples and templates for classroom use that are super quick and easy to implement right away. Liz Kleinrock also provided a ton of quotes, anecdotes, and narratives from a variety of educators from various grade levels. Another thing that we loved was that she provides a lot of examples on how to include families and caregivers into the discussions which we feel provides even more opportunities for student learning.

Bottom Line:

This book would be great for any elementary or middle school classroom. If you are new to ABAR work this book also would be super beneficial for you. Do not skip the Introduction as Liz Kleinrock shares some great insights, and it sets the tone for the rest of the book as well.
